Management
The process of efficiently achieving organizational objectives with and through people.
Planning (Management Function)
Setting organizational goals, establishing strategy, and developing plans to coordinate activities.
Organizing (Management Function)
Determining what jobs are to be done, by whom, where decisions are made, and how to group employees.
Leading (Management Function)
Motivating employees, directing others, choosing effective communication channels, and resolving conflicts.
Controlling (Management Function)
Monitoring activities to ensure they are accomplished as planned and correcting significant deviations.
Staffing (HRM Function)
Procuring and placing people through strategic HR planning, recruiting, and selection.
Henry Mintzberg
MIT researcher who identified ten interrelated managerial roles through a study of executives in the late 1960s.
Management Roles
Ten different, highly interrelated sets of behaviors managers perform, as classified by Mintzberg.
Interpersonal Roles
Managerial roles involving interactions with others; include figurehead, leader, and liaison.
Figurehead Role
Symbolic head who performs routine duties of a legal or social nature.
Leader Role
Managerial role responsible for the motivation and direction of employees.
Liaison Role
Maintains a network of outside contacts who provide information and favors.
