What are behaviors of oppositional defiant disorder?
Defiant, vindicative, irritable, angry mood that exceeds what is socially acceptable; lower frustration tolerance (can’t tolerate being told no); they don’t think they are wrong and like to blame other things and people, resistant to directions; does not follow rules

Genetics, family history of mental illness, family dysfunction
What are treatment options for oppositional defiant disorder?
Parent training, group therapy, anger management training, divaproex sodium is used to control anger and aggression
What are behaviors of conduct disorder?
Severe form of impulse control disorders; persistent violation of basic rights of others or major age-appropriate rules or norms are violated, lacks empathy, no sense of guilt or remorse (unless upset at being caught), aggression to animals and other people, destruction of property (sets fires, steals things, breaks into things), risk taking behaviors (brings a knife to a fist fight)

Physical and sexual abuse, inconsistent parenting with harsh discipline, lack of supervision, foster care, parental substance abuse or criminality

What does treatment look like for conduct disorder?
Medications, family supportive training, psychosocial interventions, anger management, and parent management training
What are behaviors of intermittent explosive disorder?
Inability to control aggressive impulses (verbal or physical), overreactions to situations, not always anger (sometimes other emotions), feels remorse when reality hits and they realize what they have done, leads to interpersonal, occupational, and criminal problems

Depression, anxiety, substance use disorders, antisocial and borderline personality disorders, and ADHD

Promote safety of the patient and others, establish rapport, set limits and expectations, consistently follow through with consequences of rule-breaking, provide structure and boundaries, explore family hx, make a home safety plan, set realistic goals, teach behavior modification, give support and encouragement, provide education about medications
