Forced Migration
When people are compelled to move from their home due to conditions beyond their control, such as war, persecution, natural disasters, or government policies. No choice….it’s not voluntary
Refugee
A person who is forced to leave their home country because of persecution, war, violence, or disaster, and who crosses an international border, seeking safety and protection. Many come from Afghanistan, Syria, Myanmar, South Sudan due to war.
Internally Displaced Person (IDP)
Someone who is forced to leave their home due to conflict, persecution, disaster, or human rights violations, but remains within their own countries borders.
Asylum Seeker
A person who has fled their home country due to persecution, war or violence, and has applied for legal protection in another country, but who’s claim for refugee status has not yet been decided. All refugees start as asylum seekers, but not all asylum seekers are granted refugee status.
Persecution
The deliberate targeting of individuals or groups, especially related to ethnicity, religion, race, nationality, political beliefs or social identity, resulting in imprisonment, torture, or genocide.
Genocide
The deliberate killing of a large group of people, particularly those of a specific ethnic, religious, national or racial group, with the intent to destroy that group. it goes beyond war or conflict, the goal is extermination of an identity group.
