Proprietorship

a colony granted by the English monarch to an individual or a group, who then set up a form of government largely independent from royal control

Quakers

members of the Religious Society of Friends that believed God spoke directly to every person through “inner light” and didn’t use priests or the Bible

Navigation Acts

English laws passed, requiring that certain English colonial goods be shipped through English ports on English ships manned primarily by English sailors for the benefit of the English

Dominion of New England

a short-lived royal union that combined several English colonies into one large colony. It was created to tighten royal control over trade and local governments and ended when angry colonists overthrew its strict leader

Glorious Revolution

A quick and nearly bloodless overthrow of King James II which resulted in a constitutional monarchy and gave the American colonists an example of how to resist unfair royal power

Constitutional monarchy

A monarchy limited in its rule by a constitution

Second Hundred Years’ War

when Britain, France, and their European allies went to war against each other repeatedly

Trivialization

when textbooks or politicians hide the harsh truth of major events to make them easier or more comfortable to accept

Tribalization

the process where native or immigrant groups form, strengthen, or rebuild distinct tribal identities and communities to survive external pressures, colonization, or shifting social landscapes

Covenant Chain

The alliance of the Iroquois, first with the colony of New York, then with the British Empire and its other colonies that became a model for relations between the British Empire and other Native American peoples

South Atlantic System

a trade network connecting Europe, Africa, and the Americas that relied on enslaved Africans work on plantations growing cash crops like sugar and tobacco to enrich European empires.

Middle Passage

The brutal sea voyage from Africa to the Americas that took the lives of nearly two million enslaved Africans
