With the exception of bulk forming laxatives, clients with ulcerative colitis & diverticulitis
Use with caution in pregnancy & lactation
Nursing education
Obtain complete history of laxative use and provide education
Chronic laxative use can lead to F&E imbalances
Increase fiber intake
Maintain regular exercise
Take with 8 oz of water
Laxatives:
psyllium, docusate sodium, bisacodyl, magnesium hydroxide, senna, lactulose
Bulk forming mechanism of action
Psyllium, methylcellulose
Soften fecal mass & increase bulk
Therapeutic use
Temporary tx of constipation
Control stool with ileostomy or colostomy
Promote passage of stool associated with decreased peristalsis
Decrease diarrhea with diverticulosis & IBS
