Epidemiology
The study of how often diseases occur in different groups of people and why.
Anorexia Nervosa
An eating disorder characterized by an intense fear of gaining weight and a distorted body image leading to excessive weight loss.
Bulimia Nervosa
An eating disorder characterized by cycles of binge eating followed by purging, such as vomiting or excessive exercise.
Binge Eating Disorder
An eating disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of eating large quantities of food, often to the point of discomfort, with a lack of control during the episodes.
Cognitive Dissonance Theory
The psychological discomfort experienced when holding two or more contradictory beliefs or when actions conflict with beliefs.
Thin-Ideal Internalization
The extent to which an individual endorses or 'buys into' the thin standard of female beauty.
DSM-IV
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, which provides criteria for the classification of mental disorders.
Sub-threshold Disorders
Eating disorders that do not fully meet the criteria for a specific eating disorder but still cause significant distress or functional impairment.
