Hospitals in the 18th Century
Shifted focus to treatment, learning, and improved nursing standards, largely influenced by Florence Nightingale.
Charity Hospitals
Established in the early 18th century, funded by the rich, provided free treatment to the poor, specialized in certain illnesses, and offered maternity services.
Workhouses
Large buildings for the poor who couldn't care for themselves, treated most poor individuals, conditions were poor until reforms in the 1850s.
Dispensaries
Offered free non-residential care, provided medicines, dental, and midwifery services without charge to the poor.
University-affiliated Hospitals
Founded in the 19th century alongside universities or medical schools, served as training schools for doctors and centers for scientific research.
Cottage Hospitals
Established from the 1860s, run by GPs, provided care for rural areas.
Florence Nightingale
Pioneered modern nursing, improved hygiene, and professionalism in nursing, established the Nightingale School of Nursing, emphasized discipline and attention to detail in nursing training.
