Electronegativity
The tendency of an atom to attract electrons to itself.
Influence on electronegativity
The more electrons in the outer valence and the closer they are to the nucleus, the stronger the attraction.
Carbon–Hydrogen electronegativity difference
0.35 (2.55 − 2.20).
Oxygen–Hydrogen electronegativity difference
0.70.
Hydrogen electronegativity (Pauling scale)
2.20.
Carbon electronegativity (Pauling scale)
2.55.
Oxygen electronegativity (Pauling scale)
3.44.
