Where in a scientific notation is the coefficient and what rule applies to it?
First number before the multiplication symbol, it must be between 1 - 10
Where in the scientific notation is the base?
it is the 10 with the exponent
what is the first step of finding the scientific notation?
place decimal point after the first non-zero digit and drop zeros to find coefficient
ex:
123,000,000,000
1.23
What is the second step of finding the scientific notation?
count the number of decimal places to the end of the number (will be the exponent)
123,000,000,000
1.23000000000 = 11 digits (2,3 & zeros)
