Gender identity
Someone's deeply felt sense of their own gender.
Cisgender
A term for someone whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth.
Trans
An umbrella term for people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.
Nonbinary
A gender identity that does not fit within the binary of male and female.
Androgynous
A gender expression that is a mix of both male and female characteristics.
Two-Spirit
A culturally-specific term used by some Indigenous peoples to describe a person who embodies both masculine and feminine spirits.
Linnaean classification
A system of naming and classifying organisms established by Carl Linnaeus, which can reflect the sociopolitical trends of its time.
Gender expression
Someone's outer appearance in public, including clothing, hairstyle, gestures, and mannerisms.
Gender fluid
A gender identity that changes over time or depending on the situation.
Agender
A gender identity that expresses no gender.
