Enteric Nervous System
network of neurons buried in the lining of GI tract that controls function of digestive system
How can the ENs operate and how?
independently of the brain and spinal cord and communicates with CNS through the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems
Parasympathetic Nervous System of GI
stimulates digestive activities
Sympathetic Nervous System of GI
inhibits digestive activities
ENS 2 Main Parts
submucosal and myenteric plexuses
submucosal plexus
embedded in connective tissue of submucosa
functions in regulating local secretions, absorption, contraction of submucosal muscle, and blood flow
myenteric plexus
located between circular and longitudinal layer of muscularis externa
exerts control over the motility of GI tract
increases tone as well as rate, intensity, and velocity of contractions
