Bone marrow
Myeloid tissue (reticular connective tissue) within bone; site of hematopoiesis.
Hematopoiesis
Blood cell formation.
Red bone marrow
In children, red marrow is present in all bones and actively forms blood cells.
Yellow bone marrow
Mostly adipose tissue; replaces red marrow with age.
Epiphysis
Ends of a long bone (e.g., humerus, femur).
Long bone
A bone with a shaft and two ends; contains epiphyses at its ends (e.g., humerus, femur).
Flat bones (adult marrow distribution)
In adults, red marrow is found in flat bones of the skull, ribs, sternum, vertebrae, and pelvis.
Adipose tissue
Fat tissue; makes up yellow bone marrow.
Reticular connective tissue
The supportive stroma of bone marrow; network of reticular fibers.
