Microsoft Word

A widely used commercial word processor designed by Microsoft that is included in Microsoft Office.

The Ribbon

The strip of buttons and icons located above the work area in Word 2007 that replaces menus and toolbars from earlier versions and contains 7 tabs.

Office Button

A button that opens a drop-down menu containing options such as open, save, and print, as well as previously opened files that can be pinned.

Status Bar

A customizable row at the bottom of the window that displays document information such as page number, word count, insert/overtype mode, caps lock, and zoom slide.

Document View Shortcuts

Four buttons on the status bar that allow you to change document views: print layout, full screen reading, web layout, and draft.

Dialog Box Launcher

An arrow located in the bottom right-hand corner of some ribbon groups that opens a dialog box for entering additional options or changes.

Title Bar

The bar that displays the name of the program and the open document, and contains minimize, maximize, and close buttons.

Quick Access Toolbar

A customizable toolbar that allows you to add frequently used command buttons for easy access.

Split Screen Button

A tiny button resembling a minus sign located at the top of the vertical scroll bar that splits or unsplits the screen when double-clicked.

First Line Indent Triangle

A marker on the ruler that controls where the first line of a paragraph begins.

Hanging Indent

An indent configuration where the remaining lines of a paragraph are indented relative to the position of the ruler triangle, opposite to a first line indent.

Drop Cap

A large capital letter used as a decorative element at the beginning of a paragraph or section.

Dropped

A Drop Cap setting where the large initial letter fits within the text of the paragraph.

In Margin

A Drop Cap setting where the large initial letter is placed in the margin outside of the paragraph.
