Why do Jews keep Shabbat

• following god example of the creation story e.g. they both rest on the 7th day

• Families can pass on traditions e.g. remember what g-d has told them

How do Jews prepare for Shabbat

All the work and food is prepared the day before Shabbat

What can’t be done on Shabbat

• work

• Cooking

• Cutting paper

• Not allowed to use machinery

• Electrical device are not allowed

Order of the Shabbat evening

• lighting of candles by women of the family

• A blessing is said

• Two themes ‘observe’ and ‘remember’ (from the Torah)

• Synagogue service - only men in orthodox and Maserati

• Shabbat meal - kiddish (blessing) → to represent how Shabbat is special → them bless children

• Bread is shared

• Reflection on history
