What is the easy way to classify an amine?

Look at the nitrogen (N) and count how many carbon groups are directly attached to it.

1 = Primary
2 = Secondary
3 = Tertiary N is attached to 1 carbon group: CH₃

  • So it is a primary amine

Another:

CH₃–NH–CH₃

  • N is attached to 2 carbon groups

  • So it is a secondary amine

And:

(CH₃)₃N

  • N is attached to 3 carbon groups

  • So it is a tertiary amine
