Entry into the system

What is the first step in the criminal justice system?

A crime is reported or observed.

What happens during the investigation stage?

Police gather evidence, interview witnesses, and determine if a crime occurred.

What occurs if enough evidence is found during an investigation?

An arrest is made.

What are the two outcomes if insufficient evidence exists after an investigation?

 Case remains unsolved, or the suspect is not arrested.

What is an arrest?

The formal taking of a suspect into custody for alleged criminal activity.

What follows an arrest?

Charges are filed by the prosecutor.

What happens if charges are not filed?

The individual is released without prosecution.

What is the initial appearance?

The first court hearing where the accused is informed of charges, rights, and bail.
