What is crude oil?

A fossil fuel which is a mixture of different compounds, most of which are hydrocarbons.

What is fractional distillation?

A method used to separate miscible liquids with different boiling points.

What is the process of fractional distillation?

  1. Crude oil is heated and vaporised.

  2. The vaporised crude oil enters the fractioning tower that is hotter at the bottom and cooler at the top.

  3. The hydrocarbons are cooled as they rise up the tower and condense at different heights because they have different boiling points.

  4. Hydrocarbons with large molecules are collected as liquids near the bottom of the tower.

  5. Hydro carbons with small molecules are collected at the top of the tower.

What is a fraction?

A mixture of molecules with similar boiling points.
