Cell Membrane
boundary between inside the cell and outside the cell
selectively permeable:
Only lets certain things in and out
What does the cell membrane do?
It identifies and communicates with other cells. It also s used to recognize and attack foreign cells
Fluid Mosaic Model
How scientist decide how the cell membrane functions and what it looks like
Phospholipid Bilayer
What the cell membrane is composed of
Phosphate group/head
Polar
Fatty Acid/tail
Non polar
Glycerol
Connected to the head and tail
5 types of proteins are:
Cholesterol
Marker Protiens/Glycoprotiens
Receptor Protiens
Transport/Channel Protiens
Enzymes
What does cholesterol do?
Stabilizes Phosopholipds tails in hot and cold environments and keeps it from becoming too hard or soft
What do receptor proteins do?
Recognizes and binds to substances on extracellular side
What do transport protiens do?
Helps substances go in and out of cell and prevents substances from contacting phosolipids
What do enzymes do?
Helps with chemical reactions in/out side f the cell
Integral
Go all the way through the membrane
Peripheral
Sits on the inside or outside of the cell
What is a organelle without a membrane?
Ribosomes
