An outbreak of a disease that affects a large number of individuals at the same time.
endemic
A disease that is always present in an area.
pandemic
A global epidemic spreading across continents.
Zoonosis
When viruses move from animals to humans.
Animal-origin infections
Around 60% of human infections are estimated to have an animal origin.
Emergence of diseases
Refers to diseases that appear 'out of nowhere' or reappear after a period of time.
Transmission routes for zoonotic diseases
Food-borne infections, water-borne infections, vector-borne infections, and direct or indirect contact with animals.
Causative agents of diseases
Includes bacteria and viruses that can cause infections.
Examples of bacterial diseases
Plague, syphilis, typhus, typhoid, and cholera.
