Decision-making process

 A step-by-step method used to make healthy and informed decisions.

DECIDE model

A six-step process for solving problems and making healthy choices.

Decision or problem

the situation that must be clearly defined before making a choice.

Alternatives

The different choices or options available when making a decision.

Consequences

The possible results of choosing a particular alternative.

Best alternative

The choice, or combination of choices, that provides the most effective solution.

Evaluate and revise

1. To examine the results of a decision and make changes if necessary.

Collaborative decision-making

1.  The process of working with other people to make a decision.

Perspective

1.  A person’s individual point of view about a problem or decision.

Goal

1.  A specific endpoint representing a condition that a person hopes to reach.

Short-term goal

1. A goal intended to be reached in a relatively short amount of time.

Long-term goal

1. A goal that requires a longer amount of time and continued effort to achieve.

Values

1. The ideas, principles, and goals that a person considers important.

SMART goal

1. A goal that is specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely.

Specific

1.  Clearly states exactly what a person wants to accomplish.

Measurable

1.  Has results that can be clearly observed or quantified.

Achievable

1. Can be realistically reached.

Relevant

1. Relates to who a person is and what that person wants.

Timely

1. Can be achieved within a reasonable period of time.

Obstacle

1. A challenge or difficulty that may interfere with progress toward a goal.
