Capillary Exchange
The movement of substances across the capillary wall
Diffusion
The movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
Filtration
The process where water and small solutes are forced out of the capillary due to hydrostatic pressure.
Reabsorption
The process where water moves back into the capillary due to osmotic pressure.
Hydrostatic Pressure
The pressure exerted by a fluid due to gravity or pumping action (pushes fluid out of capillaries).
Interstitial Fluid Hydrostatic Pressure (IFHP)
Hydrostatic pressure in the interstitial fluid.
Colloid Hydrostatic Pressure (CHP)
Portion of hydrostatic pressure due to colloids (proteins) in the blood.
Osmotic Pressure
The pressure created by the difference in solute concentration between two solutions separated by a semipermeable membrane (pulls fluids into the capillaries).
Interstitial Fluid Osmotic Pressure (IFOP)
Osmotic pressure in the interstitial fluid.
Blood Colloid Osmotic Pressure (BCOP)
Portion of osmotic pressure due to colloids (proteins) in the blood.
Net Hydrostatic Pressure (NHP)
The difference between colloid hydrostatic pressure and interstitial fluid hydrostatic pressure (CHP - IFHP).
Net Colloid Osmotic Pressure (NCOP)
The difference between blood colloid osmotic pressure and interstitial fluid osmotic pressure (BCOP - IFOP).
Net Filtration Pressure (NFP)
The overall pressure gradient that determines the direction and rate of fluid movement across the capillary wall (NFP = NHP - NCOP).
