Superior

An anatomical term meaning closer to the head or higher up on the body (also called cranial).

Inferior

Refers to a body part located lower down or closer to the feet than another part (for example, the mouth is inferior to the nose).

Cranial

Relating to the skull, the cranium, or a direction toward the head.

Caudal

It describes a position closer to the tail or bottom end of the spinal axis.

Anterior

Positioned at or towards the front.

Ventral

Relating to the belly, abdomen, or the front/underside of a body.

Dorsal

Located on, near, or toward the back or upper surface of an organism.

Posterior

Positioned toward or located on the back of the body.

Proximal

A body part is located closer to the center of the body or to the point of attachment of a limb.

Distal

A body part is located farther away from the center of the body, the trunk, or the point where a limb attaches.

Frontal Plane

A vertical slice that divides the body into front (anterior) and back (posterior) sections.

Sagittal plane

A vertical, longitudinal flat surface that divides the body into left and right sections.

Transverse Plane

An imaginary horizontal line that divides the human body into upper (superior) and lower (inferior) parts.

Thoracic Cavity

Hollow space in the chest enclosed by the rib cage, spine, and sternum, and separated from the abdomen by the diaphragm.

Pleural Cavities

The small, fluid-filled space between the two thin membranes that cover the lungs and line the inside of the chest wall.

Mediastinum

Central compartment of the chest cavity located between the two lungs.

Pericardial Cavity

A small, fluid-filled potential space between the two inner layers of the pericardium that lets your heart beat smoothly without friction.

Abdominopelvic Cavity

A large body space located below the diaphragm that

holds most of your digestive, urinary, and reproductive organs.

Abdominal Cavity

A large body space that houses and protects major digestive,

urinary, and endocrine organ.

Pelvic Cavity

A bowl-shaped body space located inferior to the abdominal cavity

and surrounded by the pelvic bones.
