What type of structures do ionic compounds have?

onic compounds have regular structures (giant ionic lattices)

2
New cards

What is a giant ionic lattice?

A structure in which there are strong electrostatic forces of attraction in all directions between oppositely charged ions.

3
New cards

Do they have high or low melting and boiling points? (and why?)

These compounds have high melting points and high boiling points because of the large amounts of energy needed to break the many strong bonds.

4
New cards

Can ionic compounds conduct electricity?

No - only when molten or in aqueous solutions

5
New cards

Why can ionic compounds only conduct electricity when molten or dissolved in water?

As their ions are free to move and therefore can carry charge allowing it to flow
