Solvent
A substance that dissolves a solute to form a solution.
Solute
A substance dissolved in a solvent to form a solution.
Solution
A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances.
Ionization
The process by which atoms or molecules gain a positive or negative charge.
Ionic Compound
A chemical compound made up of positively and negatively charged ions.
Electrolytes
Compounds that conduct electricity when dissolved in water.
Acid
A substance that releases hydrogen ions (H+) when dissolved in water.
Base
A substance that can accept hydrogen ions (protons) in a solution.
Strong Acids and Bases
Acids and bases that dissociate completely in solution and are strong electrolytes.
Weak Acids and Bases
Acids and bases that do not dissociate completely in solution and are weak electrolytes.
Insoluble Salt
A salt that does not dissolve in water.
Net Ionic Equation
An equation that shows only the particles that participate in the reaction.
Saturated Solution
A solution that has dissolved the maximum amount of solute at a given temperature.
pH
A scale used to specify the acidity or basicity of a solution.
Neutralization Reaction
The reaction between an acid and a base to produce salt and water.
Spectator Ions
Ions that do not participate in the actual chemical reaction.
Titration
A technique to determine the concentration of an unknown solution.
