Saturated Fatty Acids (F.A.)
No double bonds, 2 hydrogen atoms. Examples: Palmitic, Stearic.
Unsaturated Fatty Acids (F.A.)
Contains double bonds, 1 hydrogen atom. Examples: Oleic, Linoleic, Linolenic, Arachidonic.
Monounsaturated F.A.
1 double bond. Example: Oleic.
Polyunsaturated F.A.
2 or more double bonds. Example: Linoleic.
Short Chain
4 or fewer carbons. Examples: Acetate, Butyrate, Propionate.
Medium Chain
6-12 carbons, no special transport required. Examples: Capric, Caprylic, Caproic, Lauric.
Long Chain
14 or more carbons, requires transporters. Examples: Palmitic, Myristic, Stearic.
Linoleic
Omega-6 fatty acid, Arachidonic F.A. Functions: Arterial dilation, Contractility of heart.
Linolenic
Omega-3 fatty acid, Produces Eicosanoids (like EPA & DHA). Functions: Growth & development, Clotting & blood pressure regulation.
Eicosanoids
20 carbons. Examples: Thromboxane, Leukotrienes.
Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA)
20 carbons + 5 double bonds.
Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA)
22 carbons + 6 double bonds.
