supporters of new constitution. Large landowners, wealthy merchants and professionals. Advocated for weaker state govs but stronger national gov, with indirect election of officials. Wanted gov by elite, expecting few violations of individual liberties

Anti-federalists

critics of new constitution, small farmers and laborers. Wanted strong state gov and weak national gov. Wanted direct election of officials and rule by the common man. Thought new gov was enemy of freedom and would erode their fundamental liberties

Factions

group of self-interested people who use the gov to get what they want, trampling the rights of others in the process
