Chief Executive
The role where the President implements and enforces laws, treaties, and court decisions, appoints and fires officials, and issues executive orders.
Executive Orders
Orders issued by the President as part of the Chief Executive role to direct the operations of the federal government.
Legislative Leader
The role in which the President proposes and vetoes legislation, utilizes message power, calls special sessions of Congress, and delivers the State of the Union Address.
State of the Union Address
An annual message delivered by the President to Congress as part of their legislative leadership responsibilities.
Veto Override
A check where Congress can override a President's veto of legislation.
Commander-in-Chief
The President's role as the head of the armed forces, though only Congress has the power to declare war and control military funding.
Chief Diplomat
The role where the President sets overall foreign policy, appoints and receives ambassadors, and negotiates treaties and executive agreements.
Diplomatic Recognition
The power of the President to recognize foreign governments as part of the Chief Diplomat role.
Chief of State
The President's role as the ceremonial leader and living symbol of the nation.
Judicial Powers
The authority of the President to appoint federal judges and issue pardons, amnesty, commutations, or reprieves.
Pardon
A judicial power of the President to provide legal forgiveness to people convicted of federal crimes.
Amnesty
A judicial power providing a group pardon to individuals convicted of federal crimes.
Commutation
The President's power to reduce the length of a sentence or a fine imposed by a court.
Reprieve
The President's power to postpone the execution of a sentence.
Chief Administrator
The role of the President as the CEO of the federal bureaucracy, managing millions of employees and trillions in annual spending.
Party Leader
The role where the President selects the Vice Presidential nominee, supports party candidates in midterm elections, and acts as the primary fundraising force.
Economic Leader
The role in which the President is responsible for overall economic health, nominates the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, and proposes the federal budget.
Moral Leader
The role of the President as a representative of the American people providing moral leadership.
