What is an isotope?

  • Different atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons

    • This means they have the same atomic/proton number, but a different mass/nucleon number

What is the symbol for an isotope?

  • The symbol for an isotope is the chemical symbol (or word) followed by a dash and then the mass number

Why do isotopes share chemical properties?

  • They have the same number of valence electrons, which is what determines an element’s chemical properties

  • The only thing that changes is the mass/nucleon number, which determines their physical properties (such as boiling point), therefore they have different physical properties
