What is biology?
The study of life.
What is an organism?
An individual living thing, such as a rabbit or tree.
What is a species?
A distinct form of life; a group of organisms that can reproduce with each other.
What is a cell?
Life's basic unit of structure and function, made of organelles.
What is DNA?
The chemical responsible for inheritance.
What is a gene?
A unit of inherited information found along a DNA molecule.
What is a population?
A localized group of organisms of the same species.
What is a community?
All organisms living in an area
What is an ecosystem?
A community of all living and nonliving things in an area.
What is the biosphere?
All parts of the planet inhabited by living things, including land, water, and atmosphere.
What is the order from smallest to largest?
Organism → Population → Community → Ecosystem → Biosphere.
What are the 6 characteristics of living things?
Grow/Develop, Adapt, Respond, Cells, Reproduce, and need Energy.
What does it mean for living things to grow/develop?
They increase in size and/or change as they mature.
What does it mean to adapt?
Living things have traits that help them survive and reproduce in their environment.
What does it mean to respond?
Living things react to their environment.
What is reproduction?
The process by which organisms produce offspring.
What is a prokaryotic cell?
A cell with no nucleus.
What is a eukaryotic cell?
A cell with a membrane-bound nucleus.
What are the 4 eukaryotic kingdoms?
Plants, Animals, Protists, and Fungus.
What does the work of scientists begin with?
Making observations and asking questions.
What is inquiry?
Asking questions about nature and using observations and experiments to find answers.
What is data?
Individual facts or statistics collected during an investigation.
What are variables?
Things that change.
What is qualitative data?
Data describing the quality of something, such as color, smell, texture, or feeling.
What is quantitative data?
Data describing the quantity of something that can be measured or counted.
What is the independent variable?
The thing you CHANGE in an experiment.
What is the dependent variable?
The thing you MEASURE in an experiment.
What is a controlled experiment?
An experiment that isolates and tests a single variable.
What is a domain?
The broadest category of life.
What is biodiversity?
The variety of different living things.
