Purpose
The ICC prosecutes individuals for serious crimes of international concern like genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression.
Jurisdiction
The ICC can prosecute individuals, regardless of nationality, for crimes committed in a member state or by a national of a member state.
Foundation
The ICC was established by the Rome Statute on July 17, 1998, and became effective on July 1, 2002.
Membership
123 member states are parties to the Rome Statute, while non-member states are not under ICC jurisdiction unless they accept it voluntarily or a case is referred by the UN Security Council.
Cases and Proceedings
The ICC handles criminal prosecutions, issues arrest warrants, conducts trials, and imposes sentences, including imprisonment.
