Great railroad strike of 1877

A large number of railroad workers went on strike because of wage cuts. Was an example of how government always sided with employers over workers in the Gilded Age.

Long depression (1873-1879)

A period of economic recession and deflation sparket by the collapse of Jay Cooke & Company, leading to bank failures, business failures, and high unemployment rates.

Wealthy businessmen that dominated the american economy who created new methods of business, changing the american economy and causing bad working conditions for their employees.

continuation of the Monroe doctine saying that the US would retaliate if europe interfered with the western hemisphere.

had the idea of “survival of the fittest”. This idea connected to social darwinism and led to new ideas about class structure.

An essay written by Carnegie about how the wealthy should use their wisdom and money to benefit society.

The idea that americans were destined to take over the western hemisphere. this led to increased expansion.

A note sent to congress stating that the us had the right to intervene to manage the independent states of the western hemisphere. It led to attempts to prevent european interference.

Alfred thayer mahan

wrote a book stating that expansion could be achieved through sea power. This was popular with Roosevelt and led to US decisions to take over hawaii.

Wrote a book about how the frontier was important for us democracy but that it had ended a few years prior. This led to Roosevelt’s decision to turn to Mahan’s book.
