SENSORIMOTOR SYSTEMย NERVES
Sensory = afferentย
Motor = efferentย
FEEDBACK
Critical for coordination of motor movementsย
Movements that do not require feedback are called ballistic movementsย
LEARNING
Initially, moves are under conscious control, then they become automaticย
ย
APRAXIA
Disorder of voluntary movementย
Not a motor deficit like paralysis/weakness or lack of motivation/comprehensionย
Typically, a person cannot perform a specific task out of context when requested but can perform the task spontaneously under natural conditionsย
Associated with damage to left parietal cortexย
MIRROR NEURONS
provide a mechanism for social cognitionย
Understanding the perceptions, ideas and intentions of othersย
respond to the understanding of the purpose of the action, not just a superficial characteristicย
respond fully to particular action regardless of how it is detected (auditory/visually)ย
ASSOCIATION CORTEX - Posterior Parietal Association Cortex โ INPUTย
Integrates information about environment and about your bodyย
Directs movement and attentionย
Damage = deficits in deployment of attention = neglect, apraxiaย

ASSOCIATION CORTEX - Dorsolateral Prefrontal Association Cortex โ OUTPUTย
Neurons respond to characteristics and locations of objectsย
Neurons begin to fire before action is executed and continue until it is completedย
Outputs to secondary + primary motor cortex and frontal eye fieldย ย

SECONDARY MOTOR CORTEX
Three parts:ย
Supplementary Motor Areaย
Premotor Cortexย
Cingulate Motor Areasย ย
Stimulation of these areas elicit complex movements of both sides of the bodyย

PRIMARY MOTOR CORTEX
Major point of convergence/depature of sensorimotor signalsย ย
neurons initiate movements towards specific goals rather than coding for just one direction of movementย

LESIONS IN PRIMARY MOTOR CORTEX
Typical deficits are loss of abilityย
Lose stereognosis (the ability to identify objects from touch)ย
Reduction in speed/force of movementsย
Voluntary movement not usually lost completelyย
CEREBELLUM AND BASAL GANGLIA
Interconnected within sensorimotor systemย
Not part of the descending pathway to muscles, but interacts with different levels of the hierarchy to coordinate and modulate actions.ย
CEREBELLUM
10% of brain mass but over 50% of neuronsย
Compares inputs from these systems to correct movements that deviate from intended courseย
Plays a major role in motor learning, particularly those that involve timingย

CEREBELLUM DAMAGE =
Posture difficult to maintainย
Can't adapt movement to changing conditionsย
loss of ability to control:ย
Direction/force/amplitude/velocity of movementย
BASAL GANGLIA
Cluster of interconnected nucleiย
Involved with motivation and movementย
May be responsible for movement vigourย
Responsible for suppressing motor activityย

SPINAL CORD CIRCUITS
Both pathways have major tracts, one that descends directly to the spinal cord, another that descends indirectly to the spinal cordย
Ventromedial neurons project to proximal muscles close to spinal cordย
Dorsolateral neurons project to distal musclesย
MOTOR UNITS
Comprises of a single motor neuron and all the skeletal muscles that it innervates.ย ย
Fingers/face motor units have few fibres for each motor neuron vs legsย
MOTOR END PLATE
The junction between motor neuron and the muscle fibreย
The motor neuron releases Acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction which causes the muscle to contractย
RECEPTOR ORGANS OF TENDONS AND MUSCLES
Golgi Tendon Organsย
Embedded in the tendons and respond to increase in tensionย
Can inhibit contraction if tension too highย
Muscle spindlesย
Embedded in muscle tissueย
Signals change in muscle lengthย

INTRAFUSAL MOTOR NEURONS
Without intrafusal motor neurons, spindles would become slack and unresponsive to stretch during an extrafusal muscle contractionย
They function by adjusting the length of intrafusal muscles, maintaining an appropriate degree of tension on muscle spindles
STRETCH REFLEX
Stretch reflex elicited by sudden external stretching force on a muscleย
Spindle receptors are stretched and send signal to the spinal cordย
Automatically stimulates motor neurons in the ventral horn to send APs back to the muscle containing the spinal -> contractsย
RECURRENT COLLATERAL INHIBITION
Each motor neuron branches just before exiting spinal cordย
One branch synapses onto a small inhibitory interneuron (Renshaw cell)ย
Renshaw cell inhibits the motor neuron each time it fires, diverting the action to another member of the motor poolย
Prevents fatigue by giving regular break to motor circuitย
PRACTICE CREATES CENTRAL SENSORIMOTOR PROGRAMS
Response chunking;ย
Practice combines sensorimotor programs that control individual responses into programs that control sequences of behaviourย
Shifting control to lower levels:ย
Practice shifts control of motor programs to lower levels, freeing up resources at higher levels for other thingsย
BODY REPRESENTATION/SCHEMAย
Our brain needs to keep track of where our limbs are through time and spaceย
Navigate safelyย
Interact with objects/peopleย
Communicate and portray emotion non-verballyย
A vital requirement for maintaining body representation is multisensory integration.
PROPRIOCEPTION
Sense of the position of body parts relative to one another and their motionย
What we see and feel the position of our body parts, are integratedย
unified representation of events, both of the outside world and of our bodyย ย
MULTISENSORY INTEGRATION & BODY REPRESENTATIONS
MSI enables us to update representations of our bodies continuouslyย
Automatic - doesnโt require effortful processingย
MSI more likely to be integrated into a single event if they correspond in time and spaceย
Information of each sense is not equally/reliably weighted = greatest weight given to most spatially precise source of informationย
We can exploit these perceptual weightings howeverย
TEMPORAL PARIETAL JUNCTION
important for limb representation/updatingย
TPJ damage/disfunction is associated with out of body experiencesย
MIRROR HAND ILLUSION PREDICTIONS
Without mirror there should be no systematic pattern of reach errors related to mirror hand positionย
It should not matter where left hand is sitting as there is no mismatch between felt and seen hand locationsย
Control conditionย
Reach errors will be systematic, the more the real and mirror locations differ, the greater the reach errorย
The pattern of errors will be consistent with the brain representing the hand somewhere between the real and mirror signalled locationsย
MIRROR HAND ILLUSION OUTCOMES
Real hand and mirror signal at same locationย
Reach is accurateย
Mirror hand signals a location on the opposite side to real handย
Participants reaches relatively straightย ย
Mirror signals a location further left than the real handย
Participants stops further rightย
Mirror signals a location further right than the real handย
Participants stops further leftย ย
MIRROR HAND ILLUSION RESULTS
Participants reaches showed systematic errors towards the seen location of the hand rather than what they feltย
Further the hand in mirror differed from the real hand, the less accurate they wereย
This is consistent with their brain representing their hand as somewhere between its real location and the location signalled in the mirrorย
PROPRIOCEPTIVE DRIFT
The reliability of proprioceptive information is known to degrade over time, with proprioceptive drift occurring over very short timescalesย
Change in perceived position of obscured handย
Without fake hand, drift tends to occur towards the middle of the body due to it being the default positionย
With the fake hand, drift tends to occur towards the fake hand because the brain relies on visual input, now that proprioceptive input is degradedย
MIRROR BOX THEORY
For patients with phantom limb syndrome the mirror box illusion can be used to reset the missing limb and alleviate painย
RUBBER HAND ILLUSION - SYNCHRONOUS STROKING
Temporal correspondenceย ย
Sensations occur at same timeย
Spatial correspondenceย
Stroking occurs in same direction and same location on both handsย
ย
Results in integration of inputs into single eventย

RUBBER HAND ILLUSION - OUTCOMES
Referral of touch โ stroking sensation is coming from the rubber handย
Proprioceptive drift towards rubber handย ย
Temperature drop in hidden handย
These effects weaker in asynchronous than synchronousย
