How is displacement different from distance? What information does displacement include that distance does not?
Distance is the total path traveled. Displacement is how far and in what direction you are from where you started.
What is the difference between Kinematics and Dynamics? How do they relate to motion?
Kinematics describes motion without looking at its causes, while dynamics studies motion and the forces that cause it.
What is a reference point, and why do we need one to describe an object's position?
a fixed place used to describe an object's position. We need one so we can tell where the object is located.
Can an object's position be described as negative? If so what would a negative position mean and how does the choice of reference point affect it?
Yes. Negative means the object is on the opposite side of the reference point.
Two students describe the same car as being in different positions. Could both students be correct? Explain how different reference points or coordinate systems could cause this.
Yes. They could use different reference points, so the car can have different positions.
A student walks 5 m east and then 5 m west back to their starting point. What is their total distance traveled and what is their displacement? Explain why.
The total distance is 10 m because the student walked 5 m east and 5 m west. The displacement is 0 m because the student ended at the same place where they started.
