Structure of metal
Metals loose valenced electron to become positively charged ions called cations.
The valenced electrons moves freely.
The metal structure is described as the closely packed metal ions together surrounded by a sea of delocalised electron
Alloy
Alloy is a mixture of elements(usually in molten state) of metal and non metals
Examples and use of alloy
Ex brass,copper,tin
Used to make a metal harder and resistant to corrosion and rust
Can also improve the physical appearance of the metal
Properties of metal
●high density, mpt and bpt because of the strong electrostatic force of attraction between atoms
●malleable amd ductile as the atoms are closely packed together and can slide over each other
●good thermal and electrical conductor as the delocalised electrons transfer heat and electricity
Properties of alloy
●does not rust or corrode
●are harder and less malleable(due to different sizes of atoms together)
●has a lower mpt than pure metal
