are individuals who favor government actions new programs, regulation and appropriations to deal with national problems

formed around philosophies that are out of the mainstream (socialist/communist party and libertarian party)
depression parties
- economic hard times produce unhappiness with major parties, these parties lose strength when the economy improves (populist party and reform party)
splinter parties
form after a split of a major party over policy and personal conflicts (progressive- bull moose party- 1912 and American independent party- 1968- Wallace)
do minor parties help our political system?
Helps our system by- raising important issues, bringing people together, raising awareness of the general public, giving people a sense of belonging
Possible problems?- divides people that would have been loyal to a party, takes votes from major party candidates, takes focus away from issues that may be more important to the public
excuses for not voting
