What are bone anatomical terms?
-Many bone features have a unique term.
-Often times we name not only the bones, but specific portions of bone.

Axial=middle/center
Appendicular=limbs
What is a paired bone?
2 bones of the same type on the left and right side of the body
What is an unpaired bone?
A bone located along the midline of the body.
What is the body of a bone?
The main part of the bone.
What is the head of a bone?
The enlarged and often rounded end of the bone.
What is the neck of a bone?
The constricted (thinner) part between head and body.
What is the margin of a bone?
The edge (border) of the bone.
What is an angle of a bone?
A bend in the bone.
What is the ramus?
Branch of the body of the bone beyond the angle.
What is a condyle?
A smooth, rounded articular surface (has articular cartilage)
What is epicondyle?
Unique term for slight "bumps" above the condyle.
What is a facet?
Small, flattened arti ular surface.
What is line or linea?
Low ridge on bone.
Ex. skull
What is a crest or crista?
Prominent (noticeable) ridge on bone.
What is a spine?
A very high ridge on bone.
What is a process?
A prominent projection
What is a tubercle?
A small rounded bump
What is tuberosity or tuber?
Knob, larger than tubercle
What is Trochanter?
Larger tuberosities on proximal end of femur.
What is foramen?
Hole in bone
What is a canal or meatus?
Tunnel in bone
What is a fissure?
Cleft or split in bone
What is sinus or labyrinth?
Cavity within bone
What is fossa?
Depression (lowered area) of bone
What is a notch?
Depression in the margin (border) of bone.
What is a grove or sulcus?
Deep, narrow depression.
