Anticlines are upfolds and synclines are downfolds.

How are fold mountains formed?

Two plates collide. The heavier plate subducts under the lighter plate, into the mantle. The lighter plate then buckles into a series of folds.

The two plate collide as usual, but neither plate subducts. They both buckle and fold upwards into a series of folds. e.g. Indian plate collision with the Eurasian plate.
