Cephalic
The head, which is subdivided into the cranium (skull) and facies (face).
cervical
The neck region (cervical) that connects the head to the main body trunk.
Axillary
Anterior surface anatomical landmark referring to the armpit (Axilla).
Brachial
Anatomical region referring to the arm (Brachium).
Antecubital
Anterior upper limb landmark referring to the front of the elbow (Antecubitis).
Antebrachial
Anatomical region referring to the forearm (Antebrachium).
Carpal
Anatomical region referring to the wrist (Carpus).
Pollex
The specific anatomical term for the thumb.
Popliteal
Posterior lower limb landmark referring to the back of the knee (Popliteus).
Sural
Posterior lower limb landmark referring to the calf (Sura).
Calcaneus
Posterior lower limb landmark referring to the heel of the foot (calcaneal region).
Plantar
Posterior lower limb landmark referring to the sole of the foot (Planta).
Anatomical Position
Standard standing position used for the study of anatomy in the living where palms are turned forward and forearm bones are parallel to ensure precise communication.
Anterior / Ventral
Directional terms meaning front or towards the front of the body.
Posterior / Dorsal
Directional terms meaning in back or behind.
Proximal / Distal
Directional terms used exclusively on the limbs (not on the head or trunk) to denote position relative to the point of attachment.
Superior
Directional term meaning towards the head.
Ulna
The medial bone of the forearm located on the pinkie side of the antebrachial region.
Radius
The bone of the forearm located on the thumb side of the antebrachial region.
Tibia
The medial and innermost bone of the leg.
Fibula
The lateral bone of the leg.
Belly
The part of the muscle that contracts (shortens).
Tendon
Rope-like connective tissue that attaches muscles to bone.
Ligament
Strap-like connective tissue that attaches bone to bone.
Aponeurosis
A wide, flat tendon.
Origin
The less movable, more medial, or more proximal attachment of a muscle.
Insertion
The more movable, more lateral, or more distal attachment of a muscle.
Agonist
Muscle that performs the specific action spoken about.
Antagonist
Muscle with an action opposite to the action of an agonist.
Supination
Forearm movement turning the hand like holding a bowl of soup.
Opposition
Movement of the thumb only, closing the thumb and pinkie together.
Eversion / Inversion
Movements of the foot only, where eversion turns the foot laterally and inversion turns it medially.
TOMB
Mnemonic standing for 'Tendons on muscle/bone'.
LOBB
Mnemonic standing for 'ligaments on bone/bone'.
