Drugs
Chemical substances that interact with biological systems to produce a therapeutic effect.
Excipients
Non-medicinal pharmaceutical agents combined with active drug substances in a formulation to generate specific dosage forms.
Drug Dosage Forms
The physical forms in which a drug substance is produced and administered to a patient.
Liquid Dosage Form
A pharmaceutical formulation in which the active drug is dissolved (solution), suspended (suspension), or emulsified (emulsion) in a suitable liquid medium.
Solution (Pharmaceutical)
A liquid preparation containing one or more chemical substances dissolved in a suitable solvent or mixture of mutually miscible solvents.
Syrups
Concentrated aqueous preparations of a sugar or sugar substitute with or without flavoring agents and medicinal substances.
Simple Syrups
Saturated sugar solutions containing only sucrose and purified water without added flavorings or medicinal substances.
Simple Syrup Concentration (B.P.)
Concentration of simple syrup specified as 67.7% W/W according to the British Pharmacopoeia.
Simple Syrup Concentration (USP)
Concentration of simple syrup specified as 85% W/V according to the United States Pharmacopeia.
Non-Medicated Syrups
Syrups containing flavoring agents but no medicinal substances, which serve as pleasant-tasting vehicles for medicinal preparations (e.g., Cocoa syrup, Orange syrup, Raspberry syrup).
Medicated Syrups
Syrups containing active medicinal ingredients designed to treat specific ailments such as coughs, allergies, or digestive issues.
Sugar Sweeteners
Carbohydrate sweeteners derived from plants or natural sources that provide energy to the body, such as sucrose and sorbitol.
Non-Sugar Sweeteners
Artificial or natural substances that provide sweetness without adding calories or carbohydrates, such as aspartame and sucralose.
Antimicrobial Preservatives (Syrups)
Additives used to protect syrups against microbial growth, such as benzoic acid (0.1 to 0.2%), sodium benzoate (0.1 to 0.2%), parabens (0.1%), or alcohol (15 to 20%).
Colorants (Syrups)
Ingredients added to impart a distinctive appearance, identify formulations, improve patient acceptability, and protect light-sensitive active ingredients from degradation.
Potassium Citrate (in Potassium Citrate Mixture BP)
Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) added at 30g per 100mL, acting as a urinary alkalinizing agent to relieve symptoms of cystitis and minor UTIs.
Citric Acid Monohydrate (in Potassium Citrate Mixture BP)
Buffering agent present at 5g per 100mL that helps maintain the desired acidity level in the formulation.
Lemon Spirit
Flavorant added at 0.5mL per 100mL to provide taste in Potassium Citrate Mixture BP.
Tween 80
An emulsifying agent added at 1mL per 100mL in the preparation of Potassium Citrate Mixture BP.
Double-Strength Chloroform Water
Preservative component used at 30mL per 100mL in Potassium Citrate Mixture BP.
Simple Admixture
A preparation technique in which syrup is prepared separately and then mixed with other ingredients or solutions.
