Colonialism
A practice by which a country establishes control over a foreign territory, often involving the subjugation and exploitation of local populations.
Pan-Africanism
A political approach aiming to unify all independent African states and link their destinies, promoting self-reliance and interdependence.
African Socialism
A movement aimed at detaching African economies from dependency on foreign exploitation, focused on local interdependence.
Coup d'état
A sudden and violent overthrow of an existing government, often by military forces.
Neocolonialism
The continued economic exploitation of formerly colonized regions by former colonial powers or other wealthy nations.
Kleptocracy
A government or state in which those in power exploit national resources and steal; corruption is rampant.

The term used for the African socialism practiced in Tanzania, promoting communal ownership and cooperative economics.
Algeria's Independence
Achieved from France through violent struggle, differing from the peaceful negotiations seen in countries like Ghana.
Joseph Mobutu
The military dictator of Zaire (formerly the Congo) known for his authoritarian rule and kleptocracy.
Rwandan Genocide
The mass slaughter of Tutsi by Hutu extremists in Rwanda in 1994, resulting in around 800,000 deaths in a span of 100 days.
