bacterial vaginosis (BV)

• overgrowth of normal vaginal flora

• thin, watery, white-gray discharge

• “fishy” odor

• tx: Flagyl → TEACH PTS TO AVOID ALCOHOL

trichomoniasis

• strawberry spots on cervix → friable (if you touch with q-tip, will bleed easily)

• asymptomatic or mild sx → yellow-green, frothy, odorous discharge; vulvar itching

• tx: metronidazole (Flagyl)

gonorrhea

• Neisseria gonorrhoeae

• vaginal, anal, or oral sex

• 80% of women are ASYMPTOMATIC

• tx: antibiotic therapy

cervical motion tenderness telltale sign of

PID

herpes simplex virus

• HSV-1 and HSV-2

• transmission:

  • vaginal, anal, or oral sex

  • skin-to-skin contact with infected site

• primary outbreak: single or multiple blister like vesicles; difficult urination and urinary retention; enlargement of inguinal lymph nodes; flu-like sx, general pruritus, tingling

• recurrent episodes: same as above but more subtle at times

• tx: oral acyclovir (for supp), famcyclovir, valacyclovir

Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

• transmission: genital contact (vaginal, anal, oral sex)

• >40 types

• vaccine (Gardasil or Cervarix)for 9-26 y/o → prevents 4 common HPV types
