Visible Light
Electromagnetic radiation that can be perceived by the human eye, allowing humans to visually see their surroundings.
Ultraviolet Light
A form of light beyond the visible spectrum that cannot be seen with naked human eyes, which causes sunburn but is also used in sterilization and fluorescence.
Luminous Objects
Objects such as the Sun, candles, or light bulbs that emit their own light.
Speed of Light in a Vacuum
The fundamental constant in physics, denoted as c, which is approximately 299,792,458meters per second (or 300000kilometers per second) in space.
Propagation of Light
The concept describing how light or any electromagnetic wave travels from one point to another through mediums or space.
Electromagnetic Radiation
Energy propagated through space in the form of oscillating electric and magnetic fields.
Wave Crest
The top point of a wave.
Wave Trough
The bottom or dip of a wave.
Amplitude
The height of a wave measured from its equilibrium (middle) position, which correlates with the brightness or intensity of light waves and the energy carried by the wave.
Wavelength
The distance between two consecutive crests or two consecutive troughs of a wave, denoted by λ.
Frequency
The measure of how often a wave cycle occurs per unit of time, measured in hertz (Hz).
Hertz
The unit of frequency, abbreviated as Hz, representing the number of cycles or oscillations of a wave per second.
Radio Waves
Electromagnetic waves at the longer end of the spectrum with wavelengths ranging from meters to kilometers, utilized for broadcasting and communication via AM and FM modulation.
Microwaves
Electromagnetic waves with wavelengths shorter than radio waves, used in radar, cooking, and telecommunications.
Infrared Radiation
Electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths slightly longer than visible light, felt as heat and essential in night vision technology.
X-rays
High-energy electromagnetic waves with short wavelengths that penetrate soft tissue but are absorbed by dense materials like bones, crucial for medical imaging.
Gamma Rays
The shortest electromagnetic waves on the spectrum, emitted by radioactive materials and cosmic events, posing health risks while aiding in astronomy and cancer treatment.
Transparent Substances
Substances, such as clear glass, that transmit most light passing through them while reflecting or absorbing very little.
Opaque Substances
Substances that completely reflect or absorb light without transmitting any through them.
Translucent Substances
Substances, such as thin plastic shopping bags, that allow some light to pass through while absorbing or reflecting the rest.
White Light
Visible light that appears colorless and consists of a blend of all wavelengths in the visible spectrum.
Incident Ray
The ray of light that strikes a surface.
Reflected Ray
The ray of light that bounces off a surface.
Normal Line
An imaginary reference line drawn perpendicular (at a 90∘ angle) to a surface.
Angle of Incidence
The angle formed between the incident light ray and the perpendicular normal line.
Angle of Reflection
The angle formed between the reflected light ray and the perpendicular normal line.
Specular Reflection
Regular reflection from a smooth, polished surface (like a mirror) where light rays remain parallel and yield a clear, focused image.
Diffuse Reflection
Reflection from a rough surface where light rays scatter in various directions, producing a blurred image.
Sclera
The tough, protective white outer layer of the human eye.
Iris
The circular, colored part of the eye that surrounds the pupil.
Pupil
The central opening in the eye that contracts in bright light and dilates in low light to regulate light entry.
Cornea
A tough, transparent outer layer covering the iris that helps focus light entering the eye.
Retina
The light-sensitive layer of tissue lining the back of the eyeball containing receptor cells that convert light energy into electrical nerve impulses.
Optic Nerve
The nerve that conducts electrical nerve impulses from the retina to the brain for visual interpretation.
Refraction
The bending or change in direction of light when it passes from one medium into another medium of different optical density due to a change in speed.
Density
A measure of how much mass is contained within a given volume of a substance, reflecting how tightly packed its constituent particles are.
