Gestalt Principles
Principles or laws of perception that help us understand how the human brain sees structure and patterns.
Similarity
Grouping similar elements together based on color, size, shape, and texture.
Breaking from Similarity
A design principle used to create a focal point by breaking away from similar design elements.
Continuation
The human eye will follow the smoothest path when viewing lines, paths, or curves.
Use of Continuation
Guiding a user’s attention in a certain direction or visually separating spaces.
Closure
The brain naturally closes gaps in a design to create a complete picture.
Proximity
Individual elements close to each other will be viewed as a group.
Use of Proximity
Creating separate spaces within a larger space by compactly arranging elements.
Figure-ground
The brain's tendency to distinguish form from its surroundings; the visual relationship between foreground and background.
Application of Figure-ground
Using the figure-ground principle to focus the user’s attention on a specific design element.
Symmetry & Order
We are drawn to symmetrical and ordered elements, which can be used to create a focal point.
Use of Symmetry in Design
Creating a sense of stability and a formal aesthetic through symmetrical furniture arrangements and clean lines.
