Motivation
The driving force behind a person applying effort over a sustained period.
Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Physiological Needs
The base level needs of survival, including food, water, and shelter.
Safety Needs

Social Needs
The need for a sense of belonging and good working relationships in the workplace.
Self-Esteem Needs
The inner desire to feel good about oneself and to have one's work recognized and appreciated.
Self-Actualization Needs
The need to reach one's full potential and achieve personal growth and development.
Locke and Latham’s Goal-Setting Theory
A theory that proposes setting goals will motivate employees, focusing their efforts on achieving business objectives.
Clarity
Goals should be simple, clear, and specific to ensure understanding among employees.
Task Complexity
The degree of challenge in a goal that keeps employees engaged and committed to its achievement.
Lawrence and Nohria's Four Drives Theory
A theory that identifies four main drives that dictate human behavior: to acquire, to bond, to comprehend, and to defend.
The Drive to Acquire
The desire to obtain both material and non-material rewards such as high pay and recognition.
The Drive to Bond
The need for a sense of belonging and connection with colleagues in the workplace.
The Drive to Comprehend
