Koryo
Kingdom on the Korean Peninsula, established in the 900s, from which present-day Korea takes its name.

Empire that began in the 500s and had gained control of much of mainland Southeast Asia by the 800s.

Vietnamese writing system based on the Western alphabet, introduced in the 1600s.

People who lived just south of China in what is now Vietnam.
Nam Viet
Kingdom of the Viets, conquered by the Chinese in 111 B.C.
Trung Trac
Noblewoman who led a rebellion against China's rule in A.D. 40.
Trung Nhi
Sister of Trung Trac who joined her in leading a rebellion against China's rule.
Tran Hung Dao
Brilliant leader who helped the Vietnamese thwart attacks by the Mongols.
Ming Dynasty
Chinese Dynasty that invaded and defeated Dai Viet in 1407.
Buddhism
Belief system adopted first by the nobles of Korea and later by the common people.
Confucianism
Belief that the Chinese forced the Vietnamese to follow.
Daoism
Belief that the Chinese forced the Vietnamese to follow.
Koreans
Adapted Chinese artistic styles, including a method for making pottery.
Haein-sa Temple
Temple that is home to the Tripitaka Koreana.
Tripitaka Koreana
A collection of more than 81,000 wooden printing blocks dating from the mid-1200s that provide the world’s most complete collection of Buddhist texts.
