Missio Dei
The concept that mission gives expression to the dynamic relationship between God and the world, representing God's YES and NO to the world.
Missions
The activity of proclaiming the Gospel to the unbeliever.
Point of Departure: Prayer
The source of power in ministry found by missionaries of all ages.
Point of Departure: Other Religions
An approach where Christians in dialogue with people of other religions are to be absolutely humble, but also absolutely bold in stating their convictions.
Point of Departure: Need Orientation
Getting to know the actual needs of people through asking and observation to maintain a comprehensive, holistic approach.
Point of Departure: Ecumenical
The perspective that God filled His body with the power of the Holy Spirit so that the continuation of His work is the responsibility of His Spirit-in-His-body.
Institutional/Mission Station Approach
A 19th-century missionary approach (also called the 'colonial approach') centered on building western-style homes, translating Scripture, running schools and clinics, where the missionary remains the final authority.
Indigenous Church/Church Growth Approach
A mission approach based on Matt 28:19 that focuses on church growth and establishing independent, self-reliant native churches using principles that do not rely on unsustainable foreign structures.
Old System (Church Growth)
A method that uses foreign funds to foster and stimulate the growth of native churches in their first stage of development, gradually discontinuing the funds later.
New System (Church Growth)
A method that applies principles of independence and self-reliance from the beginning, allowing native believers to create their own sustained structures without foreign funds.
Incarnational Approach
A humble mission strategy developed in response to the aggressive church growth approach, using Jesus' incarnation, service, and presence as the prime model.
E2 and E3 Efforts
Special evangelism efforts in the master plan of expansion designed to cross cultural barriers into new communities of not-too-distant (E2) and distant (E3) cultures.
E1 Evangelism
High-powered evangelism carried out by the national church among non-Christians of the same culture once established.
DAWN Strategy
A strategy aimed at mobilizing the whole body of Christ in whole countries to provide an evangelical congregation for every village and neighborhood of every class, kind, and condition.
Two-Thirds World Mission
A mission strategy described as being much like the Institutional Approach.
Kerygma
A model for mission defined as Proclamation.
Diakonia
A model for mission defined as Service.
Koinonia
A model for mission defined as Fellowship.
Hierophanic Religions
Religions of nations surrounding ancient Israel that expressed themselves as manifestations of the divine at holy places, with god present in an eternal cycle of nature.
Israelite Religion
A religion focused on God's salvific historical acts (Egypt, desert, Canaan), viewing history as the arena of God's activity rather than nature cycles.
Purpose of Election
In Israelite religion, the choosing of Israel by God specifically for service to God and to the marginalized.
