what factors affect food availability
food production, the amount of produce made by farmers can change due to diff factors
soil management
- well maintained soil = plant grow good. If overused, nutrients is removed = hard for plant to grow
weather patterns
- temp, rainfall affect quality and speed that plants grow
land use
- can be used for urbanisation or lost to desertification
crop selection
- each crop need diff resources to grow, some need specific climate as well
transport of food
- cost lots to transport = food cost more. Weak transport systems reduce food availability
what factors affect accessibility
main factor = cost, generally linked to poverty
poverty = unlikely to be able to access food, cant afford, unlikely to grow food cuz cant afford farming land
cant afford pesticides = cant grow many crops
location - local market can be hours away only accessible by walking for some
what factors affect utilization
how its cooked affects quality & quantity of food on nutritional value
can inc/dec. nutritional value EG. frying dec. nutritional value
unclean water & food practices affects food safety
lack of education on how food should be prepared
what factors affect stability
natural disasters + outbreak of disease
- wipe out entire crops for the season, reducing obtainability of food
conflict
- farmers flee land or fight in the conflict/war
food used as a weapon
- enemies cutting of food supplies in order to gain ground in the battle
crops destroyed during fighting
food diverted to the war effort = general public have less access to food
climate change effect
global warming can have some countries in floods or droughts, some with rain or not
high temp = hard for farmers to grow crops esp if land they use is not as fertile
livestock dont have enough grass = theyre smaller and more expensive to produce
in Aus drought = food that we export is expensive = poorer people who could afford food cant no more
