What are the 3 stages of swallowing?
Oral, Pharyngeal, Esophageal
of the three stages of swallowing, which one is VOLUNTARY?
Oral
What are the two halves of the Oral Stage of swallowing?
preparation and 2. transport
What is lingual stripping?
Tongue "squeezes" the bolus backward along the hard palate and into the pharynx
Mandibular (jaw) opening during chewing
is assisted by contraction of the _______ and ______
as well as the __________(which are all suprahyoid muscles)
mylohyoid, geniohyoid, and digastricus
_____ jaw movements break down food
rotary
______helps to soften food and starts the digestive process
Saliva
____ information helps prevent injury to the tongue during chewing
sensory
Oral Phase: Step 1
Bolus Hold Position: bolus is held between the anterior tongue and hard palate. with the tongue pressing against the palate
Oral Phase: Step 2
Anterior Tongue Elevation: tongue pushes the bolus against the hard palate, posterior tongue drops away from the palate.
Oral Phase: Step 3
Posterior Propulsion: The tongue-palate contact spreads backward, propelling the bolus from the oral cavity into the pharynx.
_____ _____ helps explain bolus propulsion through the pharynx
Boyle’s Law
Pharyngeal Stage Step 1
the soft palate raises and closes the nasopharyx, then larynx closes to block airway
Pharyngeal Stage Step 2
UES relaxes, and tongue moves backwards against the pharyngeal wall to propel the bolus
Pharyngeal Stage Step 3
Pharyngeal Stripping Wave: Sequential contraction of the pharyngeal wall from superior to inferior, pushing the bolus toward the esophagus.
after this, structures return to rest
Esopheageal Phase consists mostly of
peristalsis
MBSImP meaning
Modified Barium Swallow Impairment Profile: standardized way to observe and rate how well someone swallows.
Airway protection involves movement of the ________ complex (out and up), ________ __________ closure, and ______ closure
hyolaryngeal, laryngeal vestibular, glottic
