Productivity
The rate at which energy is added to the bodies of organisms in the form of biomass
Biomass
The amount of matter stored in the bodies of a group of organisms
Gross Primary Productivity (GPP)
The rate at which solar energy is captured in sugar molecules during photosynthesis
Net Primary Productivity (NPP)
GPP minus the rate of energy used for metabolism and maintenance
10% Rule
The energy that is 'lost' is used in the form of respiration to make ATP or released as unusable heat between trophic levels
Ecological Pyramids
Represent the flow of energy from trophic level to trophic level, the amount of energy stored in living organisms, and the number of individuals in each trophic level
Energy Pyramid
a diagram that shows the energy that is available at each level of an ecosystem
Biomass Pyramid
Diagram representing the biomass in each trophic level of an ecosystem
Marine Biomass Pyramid
pyramid might be more top heavy (or even inverted) due to the fast turnover rates of algae, presence of phytoplankton, etc.
Number Pyramid
represents the number of organisms at each trophic level
