Orchid
Flowering monocots with modified flower parts in multiples of 3, predominantly grown for their flowers.
Orchidaceae
The orchid family, containing over 800 genera and 25,000 species.
Terrestrial Orchid
Orchids that grow out of the soil, obtaining nutrients and structure from the soil and its solution.
Lithophytic Orchid
Orchids that cling to rock faces and crevices, obtaining nutrients from the rock surface and the air/rain.
Epiphytic Orchid
Orchids that cling to other plants or their remnants, obtaining most of their nutrients from the air/rain.
Velamen
Spongy tissue on the outer root of orchids that absorbs water.

Crossing species from different genera to produce offspring with new morphologies, increased vigor, and flower size.
